Easy & Simple DIY Ideas For Home Decor

Decorating your home can be a tiresome job but it’s an important one. How your home is decorated is a way to send a message to the world about who you are while also giving your place the feel that is ideal for you.

One way to make the work of home decor more satisfying is to get involved in some DIY projects. Do-it-yourself pieces can add the perfect accent to a room, whether it be whimsical, colorful, vintage, or rustic.

Not only are DIY projects fun and fulfilling but they’re also a great way to save money and repurpose things around your house. Not to mention that recycling items through DIY projects also reduces your carbon footprint and helps the environment.

To help you get started or give you some inspiration for your own DIY home decorating, we’ve put together a list of some of the easiest projects and ideas that are sure to add a fresh feel to any room in your home!

1. Rustic Rope Vase

Vases with rustic swirls of rope are a common sight in home decor stores but you can save money and do it yourself. All you need is a long piece of rope, a glass vase, and some hot glue.

Rustic Rope Vase

Start by putting a dab of glue on the end of the rope and push it in at the bottom of the vase. Put two dabs on opposite sides of the rope every time you wrap the rope around again. Once you reach the top of the vase, trim the end of the rope and voila, you’ve got yourself a lovely, rustic piece.

If you want to take it a step further, you can bust out your painting supplies and add a nice design to the rope itself as well.

2. Star Twine Mirror

This project is designed for a mirror but it would work for any hanging wall piece to which you’d like to add a little bit of character. All you’ll need to get the job done is some rope or twine, some nails, and some painter’s tape.

Star Twine Mirror

First, you’ll need to mark off where you want your mirror on your wall and then mark the center. Divide your space into sixteen equal parts, drawing lines out from the center spot that you marked like the reverse of cutting a pizza. Mark each of the sixteen points around the edge of your mirror with numbers going from 1 to 16.

Next, go to your first point. Measure out a 16-inch vertical line and mark it. For point number two you’ll do the same, except with a 12-inch vertical line. Continue doing this, alternating for each number until all 16 are done – eight with 16-inch lines and eight with 12-inch lines. Mark each outer point with the numbers 17 to 32 moving in a clockwise fashion, and hammer nails into all of the points from 1 to 32.

Now, all there is left to do is to wrap your twine or rope around the nails in whatever design you please! After you’re done, simply hang your mirror or piece of art where you want it and you’re all set.

3. Wool Coasters

This DIY home decor project is sure to add a comfy feel to any space that you put them in. Coasters not only save your tables from dreaded coffee rings and hot beverage burns but they can also be a nice accent piece for the table they are on.

Wool Coasters

To create these homey wool coasters, you need to wash old 100% wool shirts, sweaters, or cardigans in hot water and then dry them alongside an agitator such as denim. After three drying rounds, your wool should almost feel like feltā — nice, and taut.

Next, grab a pencil and a large glass and begin drawing the outlines of your coasters onto your old sweaters. You’ll have a set of lovely coasters that you made yourself in no time.

4. Book Planter

If you want a piece that will add a level of sophistication to your space then look no further than a book planter. It combines books and plants, two of the most dignified home decor pieces that you can use.

Book Planter

You can do this DIY project with the book open or closed – it’s basically the same concept. First, you’ll want to glue all of the pages together by smearing some sticky stuff along the edge of the pages. Then you mark the space on the cover or inside the book where you’d like to put your plant.

Using an Exacto-type knife, begin cutting the pages out. If you do it with the book closed, the cover will take some time to work through but just power on. Once you’ve cut out a chunk deep enough to house a plant, glue the edges of that space and place a piece of clear plastic bag (could be Ziploc) around the edges.

It’s tough to work drainage into this planter so going for succulents that don’t need a ton of water or attention is smart for this project. Simply put the dirt and plant into the plastic area and take care of it as needed.

5. Mason Jar Herb Garden

Here we have one of our simpler DIY projects, although what it lacks in complexity it more than makes up for in style and looks. Choose three of your favorite or most commonly used herbs, grab three mason jars and start growing your own little herb garden right in your kitchen.

Not only does this make for easy access to your favorite flavors when you’re cooking but it also saves you a trip to the grocery store. Set the trio on your kitchen windowsill for the perfect pop of nature and color in your cooking space.
